We’ll never know exactly how long this 8-year-old cat was homeless for.

Wandering as a stray, poor Popeye was found two weeks ago completely matted, with his right eye literally bulging out.

In our RSPCA Animal ambulance, Rescue Officer Nalika rushed Popeye to our Lonsdale shelter, where our skilled team of veterinarians could tend to the poor boy’s injuries.

Popeye was in truly shocking condition.

The trauma to his eye was diseased and injured beyond repair, meaning the kindest thing our vets could do for Popeye was remove his painfully injured eye. The reason that so much of this otherwise-fluffy boy’s long coat is shaved, is because it was so severely matted that it was pulling on his skin. Popeye had been in so much discomfort, which left our vets wondering just how long he’d been without a home.

“I suspect this kitty had been a homeless child for a while”, RSPCA Head Veterinarian Brad Ward says.

And poor Popeye still wasn’t out of the woods.

While treating his eye under anaesthetic, our vets also discovered that this handsome young man required major dental surgery to remove one of his canine teeth, and clean the remaining teeth from an immense build-up of tartar.

Recently, Popeye has been doing much better. He’s receiving daily medication to help treat his healing eye and teeth, and will soon be ready to find his forever home.

We’re thrilled that Popeye is on the road to recovery, but as a charity 91% funded by community donations, we need your help to cover his medical bills.

Our vets estimate the cost of Popeye’s ongoing treatment and rehabilitation will be $1,500.

Even after all the wars Popeye has faced, Dr Brad ward says this kitty is surprisingly affectionate, very cute and loves being held. We want him to have the best future possible.

* The goal for Popeye’s fundraiser includes costs associated with eye-removal surgery and ongoing treatment for his eye, his dental work, antibiotics, pain relief, and rehabilitation, as well as vaccinations and microchipping. If his medical costs are less than is raised in his name, additional funds will provide care for other animals in need.
